Richard Stainly (writer of the 1996 The Island of Dr. Moreau and director of Jodorowsky’s Dune) is now directing The Colour Out of Space, starring Nicholas Cage, Joely Richardson, Tommy Chong, Elliot Knight, Julian Hilliard, and Q’Orianka.

The movie is an adaptation of the 1927 H.P. Lovecraft horror sci-fi story with the same title. This project reunited Nicholas Cage with SpectreVision, the company behind his 2018 film “Mandy.

“A story of cosmic terror about The Gardners, a family who moves to a remote farmstead in rural New England to escape the hustle of the 21st century. They are busy adapting to their new life when a meteorite crashes into their front yard. The mysterious aerolite seems to melt into the earth, infecting both the land and the properties of space-time with a strange, otherworldly color. To their horror, the Gardner family discover that this alien force is gradually mutating every life form that it touches…including them. “

The movie was completely filmed in Sintra, a village 30 min from Lisbon well-known for its castles and forests. This movie, with a budget of 6 million mobilized several portuguese technical crews and producers. It is not the first time a big horror hollywood production uses Sintra as the set, being Roman Polansky “The Ninth Gate” with Johnny Depp one famous example.

Color ou of Space benefited from the program Cash Rebate from ICA (Portuguese film agency) whose main purpose is to attract foreign production.

The portuguese artist Jorge Coelho was the responsible for the storyboard of Color Out of Space. Jorge Coelho (b. 1977) is the founder of The Lisbon Studio and his art can be seen in Marvel’s Rocket Racoon solo series, Loki: Agent of Asgard and on 2018 Robocop: Citizen Arrest.
